Share your personal educational journey and the pivotal moments that fueled your commitment to advancing educational equity and innovation, particularly for Black boys in Memphis, TN.
Growing up in the rural backwoods of South Carolina, there were few aspirations beyond the familiar path: graduate high school and secure a "good job" at a local factory. Just managing the high school graduation proved to be a significant challenge for me. My lack of motivation turned into doubt, and eventually hindered my performance. It wasn't until my senior year, when my anticipated football scholarship fell through due to poor grades, that I realized the consequences of my lack of effort. Joining the Army shortly after proved to be a turning point; I discovered that advancement required college credits. I would have to confront my fear of failure and enroll in college courses. During an English Language Arts class taught by Mr. Fey, I achieved my first "A" in years, igniting a newfound belief in my abilities. This realization fueled my pursuit of higher education, culminating in a master's degree in education and a career as a teacher and administrator. Now, my passion lies in empowering young men to overcome their fears and realize their potential. Recognizing the telltale signs of fear of failure, I am committed to providing opportunities that make education enjoyable and enriching. Traditional teaching methods may be daunting for young men unsure of their capabilities. By promoting critical thinking and exposing students to new experiences, I strive to expand their horizons and nurture their aspirations. I firmly believe that exposure to diverse opportunities is crucial for dreaming beyond one's current circumstances. As I observe black boys in underserved communities, I see limitless promise and untapped talent. They deserve advocates who comprehend their challenges and champion their aspirations. Serving as one of those advocates brings me immense fulfillment as I work tirelessly to ensure that every young man has the support and opportunities needed to thrive.
